About TSM
About the Institute

Thiagarajar
School of Management (TSM) was started in the year 1962 by the great
philanthropist and industrialist, Shri. Karumuthu Thiagaraja Chettiar. He
started the institution with the aim to impart professional education to
upcoming managers and the business community in South India. The focus of
the initial Executive Development Programme (EDP) was to enhance the skills
of the practicing managers and entrepreneurs in and around Madurai. The
success of EDP and the accolades received from the industry were
instrumental in the introduction of the Master of Business Administration as
a part time programme in 1972. A full time MBA course was started later in
1986. Recognizing the key role of Information Technology, the Post Graduate
Diploma in Computer Application course was started in 1993 and a course
leading to the Master of Computer Applications in 1994.
TSM is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University and is approved by the All
India Council for Technical Education(AICTE). Both MBA and MCA programmes
have been accredited by NBA, AICTE for a period of three years with effect
from January 22, 2008. TSM is also recognised under section2(f) by UGC.
TSM believes that the training imparted to the students would enable them
to cope with the fast changing environment and become the initiators of
growth, greater productivity and development. The students of TSM realize
that, if they are to achieve the objectives of the institution, they must
lead by example and every student of the TSM is fully committed to:
- Strive for continuous and constant improvement
- Ethical working and integrity
- Quality
- Respect of values and contribution made by individuals
It is the endeavour of the Institution to instil in the students the
values that will enable them to shine not only as dynamic managers and
entrepreneurs but also as outstanding human beings as well.
Eminent faculty members in the areas of Marketing, Finance, Human
Resources, Production and Systems give wider and deeper insights both in
Theory & Practice to the Students of MBA.
Situated in a picturesque location, equipped with a state of the art
infrastructure, adorned by energetic and efficient faculty, TSM delivers
more than what it promises and it is no wonder that a TSM student is
academically sound, professionally proficient and ethically correct.
History of TSM
Service to Education is Service to God
Shri Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar affectionately called "Kalaithanthai"
meaning "Father of Arts" founded The Thiagarajar School of
Management (TSM) in the year 1962. This institution was the first of its
kind in Southern parts of Tamil Nadu.
The Textile King Shri Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar, popularly known as
Karumuttu, was born in the year 1893. After completing his education in
India & Ceylon, he started his career as an assistant editor in the
Ceylon English daily "Morning Leader".
He fought for the rights of Tamil labourers in plantations in Ceylon. He
contributed articles and also brought out a book titled "Indian
Immigrant on Ceylon Estates". His persistent efforts initiated the
Government to offer better working conditions. He was able to achieve this
at the age of 22. He returned to India from Ceylon in 1916 and joined the
Congress in 1917 and became president of the Labour Wing.
He setup Meenakshi Mills Ltd in Madurai in the year 1921 and went on to
establish as many as 18 textile mills. Besides, he also purchased sugar
factories at Pandiarajapuram and Thanuku in South India. The famous P.ORR &
Sons Pvt. Ltd, Chennai came under his fold. He also ventured into other
industries like Banking (Bank of Madura), Insurance (Madura Insurance, after
Nationalisation merged into United India Insurance) and News Paper (Tamil
Nadu).
During one of his business trips to Calcutta, he visited Shantiniketan,
where he met Sir Rabindranath Tagore. Inspired by Viswabharathi University,
he started many Charitable Trusts, like Thiagarajar Endowment, in 1944,
Thiagarajar dharma vanigam in 1948, Thiagarajar College Endowment Trust in
1951, the Thiagarajar Charities in 1962, and Thiagarajar Educational Trust.
In 1947, he started "Visalakshi Kalasalai" in his native A.
Thekkur. In1959, the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated
its spacious building with the adjoining hostel accommodation.
TSM Process Model
TSM MBA starts with an ice-breaking preparatory
course of about 10 day-duration to prepare students with varied academic
backgrounds for a common learning platform. The preparatory course includes
more general "soft skills" such as communication, problem-solving,
and behavioural skills, and language/communication modules depending on
identified needs of the MBA programme participants.
The TSM approach increasingly emphasises on participant-centred learning as
opposed to faculty-driven learning. The pedagogy accordingly includes
interactive learning through case studies, group discussions, projects,
seminars and business games, besides faculty lectures and presentations.
On-going interactions with practicing mangers through guest lectures,
focused seminars and workshops, industrial visits and field projects are
built into the curriculum.
In addition to regular course work, a certification process may also be
simultaneously administered primarily targeting students who may need
additional support to strengthen their communication skills and personal
profiles.
Amongst the key factors differentiating TSM MBA programme are emphasis on
value-based management and conscious efforts at inculcating a sense of
broader social commitment amongst our students. TSM's curriculum design and
course delivery would emphasise the importance of factoring ethical choices
and long-term sustainability as key variables in the managerial decision
process. It is also proposed to encourage and facilitate our students
actively participating in socially relevant/neighbourhood projects that
would help them develop into socially responsible professionals.
TSM has arrived at a process model to achieve the above mentioned
objectives in a structured and systematic manner.

Late Shri. Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar founded the Thiagarajar
School of Management (TSM) in 1962. Thereafter, Late Shri Manickavasagam
Chettiar meticulously developed the Institution. By strictly following the
high ideals set by its founders, Manickavasagam Charitable Foundation of the
Loyal Textiles Mills group manages and runs the Institution today.
TSM has an excellent academic ambience with qualified and experienced
full-time faculty and visiting professors as well, many of whom are
practicing professionals.
Faculty members are also encouraged to undertake consultancy, training and
development assignments.
The students strive to upgrade themselves regularly to keep up to the
expectations of the present corporate world. Many of the students are now
placed in respectable positions in various companies across the globe.
In this endeavour, we shall continue to offer our services to the society.

We can make a difference
We at the Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM) are committed to ensure
that the young professionals groomed at TSM live up to our motto.
Supported by an excellent infrastructure and a passionate founder group,
TSM's highly committed faculty design and deliver academic programmes that
seek to offer memorable learning experience. We constantly strive to assure
that our curricula remain contemporary. While designing and delivering our
programmes we have sought to combine flexibility and rigour - flexibility in
design and rigour in delivery and execution. In a recent shift towards
empowering the programme participants, TSM's current pedagogy strongly
emphasises on participant-centred learning. In short at TSM the participants
learn to learn.
Besides imparting the required technical and analytical tools and
techniques, TSM programme curricula also include a number of courses that
help the participants broaden their perspectives on matters as diverse as
the evolving socio-cultural and political environment, business history and
contemporary issues of concern even as they unfold. Systematic inputs on
communication and soft skills, regular interaction with leading top
management and functional experts through on-campus lectures and
tightly-guided field-based project courses - all these help groom TSMites
into well-rounded, self-starting professionals.
One of the most important differentiators - the one we cherish most - is
the emphasis on ethical and responsible managerial behaviour in TSM
curricula. TSM's own strong ethical foundations and its constant emphasis in
its academic programmes on nurturing robust ethical value system and
sustainability involving environmentally and socially responsible conduct
would impart in TSM graduates a deeper sense of values and social commitment
and responsibility. We believe we can make a difference.
We invite you to be part of TSM. TSM has a verdant and
environmentally-friendly campus that offers an excellent ambience to learn -
also to dream and reflect. And I am sure the years you spend at TSM would be
memorable and transformational.
